Winter can be absolutely magical if you decide you want to spend it well. Christmas Markets are really a good choice of discovering new cities and their Christmas traditions. The cities are filled with lights and the carols can be a great therapy for your wandering soul. I received this trip as a Christmas gift and it was the best gift ever, I swear. The Christmas Market in Colmar is already known for its colorful streets and don’t worry, Strasbourg and Basel are equally beautiful.
If you want to go to these Christmas Markets, my suggestion is to search for flights to EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg. The tickets are usually cheaper if you fly here and you can easily travel to Switzerland, France or Germany. There are a lot of buses that go from the airport to your favorite destinations.
So without further ado, here are some details about the Christmas Market in Colmar, Strasbourg and Basel.
1. Christmas Market in Colmar
This fairy tale is known as 2nd best Christmas Market in Europe for 2017. There aren’t many to be said here. Grab a warm coat, drink mulled wine and roam the streets of Colmar. Eat some tarte flambée, baeckeoffe or choucroute. The Christmas Market in Colmar is definitely one of the best places to visit in the winter. I assure you, everything is exactly how it looks: magical!
2. Christmas Market in Strasbourg
Strasbourg wasn’t initially on the list. As an on-the-spot recommendation, we bought some train tickets from Colmar and returned the same day. The train tickets are around $10 one way and the trip lasts for about 30 minutes. I strongly recommend you visit the Christmas Market in Strasbourg because it is so, so beautiful. Sincerely, it was my favorite. Recommendations? Visit Cathedral Notre-Dame de Strasbourg and eat a Bretzel or the different delicious tarts they have in a cozy restaurant. We went to L’Epicerie and it was one of the coziest place I’ve ever been in.
3. Christmas Market in Basel
You cannot visit Basel without eating fondue! Even if it isn’t Christmas-related, Switzerland is known for its delicious cheeses. Fondue is a warm mix of cheeses which are eaten with bread. D-e-l-i-s-h! What is also to be done in Basel? Visit the interior of Basel Rathaus (their City Hall) and Basel Munster. Drink all the mulled wine (seriously the best) and wander the beautifully lit streets. Tip: buy some Läderach chocolate if you’re into sweets. You won’t regret it.
As I said, winter can be a fairytale if, besides work, you decide to travel a little bit or even discover your own country (as I did here). I love Christmas Markets! Basel, Strasbourg and the Christmas Market in Colmar were the perfect destinations for this winter. Also, don’t forget, plane tickets are the best gifts you could ever make 🙂
